Apple is gearing up to unveil the iPhone 16 series next month, possibly on September 10. Exciting new details about the cameras on all four models have already surfaced, hinting at some significant upgrades.

For the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, Apple is keeping the dual-camera setup but has redesigned it with a vertical alignment on the back. These models will still have the 48 MP main camera from their predecessors, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. However, the ultrawide camera is getting a boost with a faster f/2.2 aperture, replacing the f/2.4 from last year. This change should improve low-light photography. Plus, for the first time, these non-Pro models will include macro photography, letting users capture detailed close-up shots.
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature some exciting changes, too. Both Pro models will now have a 5x telephoto lens, a feature previously exclusive to the Pro Max. This lens will be a 12 MP sensor with an f/2.8 aperture. But the big upgrade is in the ultrawide camera. It’s getting a new 48 MP sensor that uses pixel-binning technology to enhance image quality. This sensor will also support 48 MP ProRaw photos, offering high resolution and detail for more professional-level photography.
Rumors also suggest Apple will introduce a new photo format, JPEG-XL, which could improve image quality and compression. The Pro models will support 3K video recording at 120fps with Dolby Vision, elevating their video capabilities even further.
One of the most talked-about features is the new Capture Button, which will be available on all four iPhone 16 models. While similar to Sony’s long-standing button, Apple’s version will be capacitive rather than physical. It will be pressure-sensitive, allowing users to lock exposure and focus with a half-press before taking a photo. The capacitive design means it can also function like a trackpad, potentially allowing users to swipe for zooming or other actions. Developers will have the freedom to create custom functions for this feature as well.

With these updates, the iPhone 16 series is set to make notable strides in camera technology and overall user experience, reinforcing Apple’s position as a leader in smartphone innovation.
