Now that Google and Samsung have launched the Pixel 9 and Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold, the rumour mill has its eyes on one of the world’s most popular smartphones. The new smartphone series will be powered by iOS 18, which the company said will be one of the biggest iOS update in years. With a few weeks left before Apple launches the latest iPhone, here’s everything we know about the iPhone 16 series.
Design
The iPhone 16 series is said to retain the design language of the iPhone 15 with a few changes. Apple is expected to bump up the screen size of the iPhone 16 Pro to 6.3-inches while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumoured to get a 6.9-inch screen. However, these size changes may be limited to the Pro variants, meaning the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus will be the same as its predecessors.
However, the Action Button, which was previously limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, will be coming to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Apple is also reportedly working on a new Capture button for all 4 models, which will enable users to quickly take photos and videos. Similar to the shutter buttons on digital cameras, it is said to be pressure-sensitive.
Camera
The iPhone 15 series brought some much needed upgrades to the vanilla iPhone’s camera capabilities, but the upcoming iPhone 16 may not get a huge upgrade. But there is some good news.
For the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus, the primary camera will be powered by the same 48MP sensor found on the iPhone 15 lineup, but according to a recent leak by Apple Insider, the ultrawide sensor is said to get a faster aperture rate of f/2.2 from compared to the iPhone 15’s f/2.4, meaning it will be able to capture more light and click better low light shots. The upcoming non-pro models are also said to feature a vertical camera arrangement, which might help enable spatial video recording support.
Heading over into the iPhone 16 Pro territory, both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are said to have a triple camera setup. While the upcoming phones are rumoured to have the same 48MP sensor as its predecessors, Apple may replace the 3x telephoto lens with a 5x telephoto lens on the iPhone 16 Pro.
As for the ultrawide camera, it looks like Apple might go with a 48MP shooter that may be able to shoot 48MP ProRaw photos. On the software front, the report suggests Apple will introduce a new photo format called JPEG-XL, which will join HEIF, JPEG,HEIF Max, ProRaw and ProRAW Max.
Faster Apple silicon and more RAM
According to code spotted in the iOS 18 beta, the upcoming iPhone 16 will most likely be powered by the A18 chip, but Apple might differentiate between the pro and non-pro models by changing the core count of both the CPU and GPU. This means the non-pro models may be a bit slower than their pro counterparts. Rumour also has it that Apple might go with A18 and A18 Pro names.
The A18 series chips are also said to pack an upgraded Neural Engine with more cores that will help speed up on-device AI tasks. The iPhone 16 models are also said to come with 8GB RAM, which is 25 per cent more than the iPhone 15’s 6GB RAM.
Launch date
Apple is yet to officially unveil the launch date for the iPhone 16, but if we take a quick look at the tech giant’s past record, it is highly likely that the iPhone 16 series will be unveiled sometime in the second week of September.
Also, Apple has a track record of unveiling new iPhones on Tuesday’s, so there is a chance that we might see the iPhone 16 series on September 10.
