A NEW type of ‘cascading’ speed camera technology will catch you speeding – even if you slow down.
Many drivers slow down just before speed cameras and then speed up afterwards.
This allows them to avoid being fined for speeding.
However a new generation of speed cameras which use ‘cascading’ technology look set to catch out drivers who use this technique.
They work by recording your speed at the camera and for up to 0.6 miles after it.
Now Abigayle André has posted a video on Instagram revealing how the cameras, which have been rolled out in Spain, are coming to the UK soon.
The car expert said: “If you normally slow down and speed up you will not be safe. The cameras catch you up to 0.6 miles afterwards.
“They have extra radars on the cameras using cascading technology.
They were rolled out in Spain following a successful pilot and look set to be coming to the UK.”
She said that a British company called Road Angel have apparently created these cameras and have said they will be rolled out soon.
However the British government has so far not commented on the matter.
Speaking earlier this year Gary Digva, founder of Road Angel, said: “If introduced, these devices will catch and penalise more speeding motorists, encouraging more drivers to stick to legal limits and improve road safety.
“It comes after the news that one in four fatal collisions occur due to speeding on UK roads.
“This means that over 2,500 people are seriously injured every year due to excessive speeds.
“These shocking statistics alone should encourage motorists to think twice before speeding, yet it’s safe to say that the new technology will penalise even more motorists who are driving in excess of the legal limit, therefore helping to keep UK roads safer for all users.
“By capturing drivers who slam on the brakes before passing the fixed speed camera, as well as using technology to apprehend motorists who speed up again after the camera, the new radar devices will be able to penalise many more motorists than current systems.
“Although the fight goes on to reduce incidences of speeding on UK roads and accidents resulting from excess speed we believe introducing this new technology to the UK will help keep roads safer.”
CAUGHT ON CAMERA
There are currently seven types of speed cameras that can catch you out in the UK.
They include everything from SpeedSpike cameras that don’t need a flash to Redflex – which have cameras checking for speeding in up to six motorway lanes.
Mobile speed cameras often do not alert drivers that they have been caught with a flash.
This is to encourage more accurate results as drivers remain unaware that they have been monitored.
Many other kinds of cameras, such as red light cameras, will use a visible flash when capturing images of vehicles breaking the rules.
Mobile speed cameras, meanwhile, use specialised sensors or infrared technology.
And you can find out the locations of mobile speed cameras on a number of apps including Radarbot, Waze and RadarAll.
