Camera Technology: New Camera Technology for Tracing Vehicle Owners | Chennai News
Chennai: To combat rising vehicle theft cases, especially two-wheelers, police on Sunday launched a technology designed to instantly verify ownership of vehicles. This system is a key component of the ‘safe city project’, which includes the installation of around 5,250 cameras in the city for 165 crore.
The newly introduced portable cameras can scan vehicle number plates, automatically detect vehicle registration number, and cross-reference this with a database maintained at the command and control centre located at GCP headquarters in Vepery. This database includes comprehensive details of stolen vehicles as well as those involved in serious offenses.
On identifying a match, the system sends alerts to officers across the city, enabling them to screen vehicles using these portable and mobile cameras, said Sadasivam, assistant commissioner of police in Old Washermenpet, where the pilot phase of the project has been implemented. This is currently under trial, focusing on areas that see a significant uptick in two-wheeler thefts. It will be expanded to more areas in the future.
Upon confirmation of an alert that the vehicle is involved in a crime, separate handheld devices, used by field-level officers, captures a photo of the individual operating the vehicle and links it with the police’s Facial Recognition System (FRS). This system, which is updated and monitored daily by the state crime records bureau, facilitates the identification and tracking of suspects, particularly those associated with organised crime groups engaged in activities such as drug peddling.
These new cameras along with existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras (ANPR) would enhance the booking of traffic offences also significantly.
Strict vigilance and imposition of hefty fines have notably reduced road accidents, especially incidents involving non-wearing of helmets. Moreover, these digital surveillance measures have introduced a layer of transparency into traffic enforcement.
